Living will: stay in control
A living will allows you to decide who will look after your interests should you become temporarily or permanently unable to do so. This could be due to illness, dementia or an accident, for example. You can appoint one or more trusted persons to act on your behalf.
What happens if you don’t have a living will? In these cases, a judge will appoint your representative. In your living will you not only record who will represent you, but also instructions for this person to follow. This could be related to agreements regarding care, gifts (for example to save inheritance tax), the sale of your home, continuation of your business or care for your children.
A living will can have value for anyone, regardless of age. It gives you the assurance that your wishes will be respected, especially at times when you may no longer be able to make your own decisions.
